Ashes to Ashes

The heaviest weight I have ever carried,
was your ashes, down to the creek.

Into the tall grasses, I waded. Under the hot sun, I spread both of you all around me like I was casting a circle. The dust settled on my legs, my arms, my outstretched hands. It caught in my hair, in my lungs. So this is how it goes.

Here on this grassy bank, here in this summer sun, here in this wilderness, I was baptized by your eternal love.

And as I ascended from the valley, we each took our place in the circle of life.

But my arms will feel the weight of your bodies for the rest of my days.
